Welcome to Just Cause Oakland |
Welcome to Just Cause Oakland's website.
Founded in 2000, JUST CAUSE OAKLAND (JCO) is a membership-based organization building a powerful voice for Oakland's low-income tenants and workers. Our mission is to create a just and diverse city and region by organizing Oakland residents to advocate for housing and jobs as human rights, and to mobilize for policies that produce social and economic justice in low-income communities of color.
JCO members are residents in the working-class flatlands of East and
West Oakland. Our work is envisioning and creating the city we want to
live in. We are a multi-racial, multi-generational organization that
reflects the strength and diversity of Oakland's people. Through a
combination of grassroots organizing campaigns and leadership
development, we have successfully built a broad-based organization that
has an impact on policy-makers in Oakland.

Our current focus is on defeating Proposition 98, an initiative on the June 3rd ballot that, in the guise of "eminent domain reform," would amend the California state constitution to end rent control and jeopardize tenant protections. With the founding of our organization rooted in the successful fight to pass Measure EE in 2002, which gave Oakland tenants protections like the just cause for eviction requirement, we are adamantly opposed to this attack on renters, which would disproportionately affect low-income communities of color.
Check out our electoral calendar and Take The Pledge to get involved in defeating this initiative. You can also download a window sign (in English, Spanish, or Chinese),
print it out and put it in your window!
